Meet the faces behind Campbell Farms.
I was fortunate to be raised in Waterford, Ontario, on a small family farm. As I grew and changed throughout my adolescence, so did the farm itself. When I was born, we had dairy cattle and quota. By the time I was eleven, Campbell Farms had shifted focus, replacing the dairy herd with beef cattle and Suffolk sheep. Today, three generations of Campbell men work the land together, supporting a thriving cash crop operation.
"I was born to farm. I had farming bred into me from my grandfather and dad."
This is what my grandpa told me when I asked why he started farming. The men who came before him built the barns, lived in the houses, and worked the land that our family still cares for today.
“At least five generations of Campbell farmers have driven this here tractor.”
That’s a legacy to be proud of.
"It’s freedom. It’s when I think about preparing for the crop, planting, and harvesting. It’s just freedom."
That’s how my dad describes his favourite part of farming — preparing the soil for planting, or as he calls it, working dirt.
When I asked what advice he’d give to someone just starting out, he didn’t hesitate:
“Don’t be afraid. Just make a plan and do it.”
"Farming is just such a beautiful thing, I can’t see myself doing anything else."
